Travel & Transportation

London is one of the busiest cities in the world, so it is imperative you are knowledgeable about the city’s travel options and have a travel plan ready before your arrival. The best advice is to be prepared and plan in advance.

Getting To London
If you are travelling directly from Canada you will most likely arrive in London via Heathrow Airport, which is west of the city centre. The city is serviced by four other airports and if you are travelling from Europe you may wish to consider flying into City Centre Airport or Stanstead Airport, as they are located to the East of the city centre and closer to Olympic Park. For further information on your travel options contact Flight Centre.

Getting Around During the Games

Please note that at any given time during the Games there could be up to 25 million people congesting the core of the city of London. This is something that you need to consider when planning your transportation, and it is highly recommended that you do not plan on driving while in London.

Underground Tube

The most efficient and economical method of travelling around the city is London’s Underground Tube. Greater London is served by 12 Tube lines, along with the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and an interconnected local train network. Trains generally run between 5am and midnight, Monday to Saturday. Operating hours are reduced on Sunday.

Tube Travel and Maps
London's transport map is divided into six zones with Zones 1 and 2 in Central London and Zone 6 covering the outer edge of the city. It is recommended to travel using an “Oyster Card” as the prices are always cheaper than the paper tickets.

Oyster Card

An “Oyster Card” is a “swipe and enter” card that uses an electronic system which you can continue to “top up” and is available at many of the transit stations and convenience stores. The Oyster Card provides easy access to a variety of public transportation in London, including the Tube, Bus, DLR, Tram, and London Overground.

Other London Travel Tips
  • Coming from the airport it is best to use a minicab. You can book a minicab online before you depart for the airport
  • Booking a minicab: to book a minicab it MUST be done by phone or in the minicab office. This guarantees you will receive a licensed driver in a licensed vehicle and provides a record of your travel for reference in case of problems
  • You cannot approach minicab drivers on the street. If a minicab driver approaches you it is illegal and puts you at risk
  • Black Cab fares rise in price in the evening hours
